Jesus: The Way - The End of Religion (As You Know It)
Onward into Week 4 of our “Jesus: The Way” series, Pastor Tyler returns to the pulpit this week focusing on John 1:29-34.
In the Old Testament, we see a religious structure that included a sacrificial system to atone for sin in order to maintain a right relationship with God. And though this was put in place by God, it was a mere foreshadowing of what was to come. On top of that, the rules of the law got blown out of proportion by many of the religious leaders (such as the Pharisees) prior to Jesus’ coming.
Though the line between rule following and religiosity can become a bit confusing and blurry (even in new covenant times if we’re attempting to earn God’s approval or salvation), Jesus, in His fulfilling of the Law, came to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins, guilt, and shame. He’s the one that cleans us of our stains. Through faith in Him, we become “right with God,” unlike in the Old Testament sacrificial system.
Even our best actions won’t measure up to bringing salvation onto ourselves. We can’t perform our way to righteousness in God’s eyes. Thankfully, Jesus does that for us, and just like John the Baptist, we can point to the One who is the sacrificial lamb of God. The One that did it all for us, so we could be washed clean, and receive the way to eternal life.
