Upside Down Kingdom - The Ancestry Report You Didn't Expect
Without identity, we’ll get lost in the forest real quick. Though there are many ways in this world in which we may attempt to instill, create, or associate an identity for ourselves out of our own will…eventually it will fall apart because truth has a source and a foundation. We all search for it though, that is true. We’re all longing for belonging. Millions upon millions have taken ancestral lineage DNA tests over the years to understand more about their bloodlines. Some try to find identity in what they do for work or career. Others may find it in a group. And though shared common experiences, work vocations, or interests can help bring us together in community and help us communicate the things we do and ways in which we live…to place our OVERALL hope and foundation upon something that can fall apart or shift is eventually going to leave you lost. In today’s sermon, Pastor Tyler treks through the repetitively written, albeit very important foundational genealogy of Jesus Christ found in Luke 3:23-38, bridging together themes of bloodlines, identity, and purpose. Upside Down Kingdom - The Best News You Didn’t Expect
Pastor Tyler is back this week to continue our Upside Down Kingdom series, with Luke 3:1-14 as our focus passage. John the Baptist is “…proclaiming a baptism of repentance…” (Luke 3:3), where he is seen preparing the way for the Messiah (Jesus) to come prior to the start of His ministry. I think it’s fair to say that we don’t WANT to suffer. And though there are many things in life that can bring fruitful joy, suffering is still a part of the equation for us, and as hard as we may try, there isn’t a way around that reality in some way, shape, or form. We set ourselves up for being blindsided by these sobering realities if we don’t acknowledge it. Things don’t necessarily get easier when you come to follow Christ. As we see touched on in today’s sermon, things will change, your ways will change over time as a Christ follower, and despite suffering and difficulties, enduring this race in following Him will produce good fruit over time. Upside Down Kingdom - The Purpose, Promise, and Preparation of Jesus
With Pastor Tyler still out on missions this week, we dive back into our “Upside Down Kingdom” series after a 2 week hiatus with church Elder Joseph Lasslett, preaching from Luke 2:42-52. In the Scripture this week, Luke gives us a brief snapshot into the pre-teen life of Jesus, where we begin to see glimpses of Him pointing to His larger purpose and promises for being here on earth, while demonstrating the beginning of his preparation for what is to come nearly 2 decades later. The Surrendered Life - Phos Church
This week, we welcome guest preacher and Youth Pastor Jesse Allen speaking from the pulpit on what “The Surrendered Life” looks like in terms of following Jesus, utilizing Mathew 16:24-26 as the main scripture reference for today. Though imperfect as we are in living this out, the calling to follow Christ wholeheartedly is not necessarily an easy one. And though we are saved by faith in Him, surrendering our plans, habits, preferences, and timing, just to name a few examples, is part of a daily process of sanctification in following in His footsteps. The Exodus Story & the Missio Dei - Phos Church
As Phos Church prepares to send off a team to Kenya this week for a missions trip, we decided to take a pause from our current “Upside Down Kingdom” series to parallel a sermon to commemorate this upcoming adventure. Entitled “The Exodus Story & the Missio Dei,” Pastor Tyler preaches on what God’s heart is for his people, with our base Scripture this week coming from Exodus 9:16. Deriving from Latin, the term “Missio Dei” means “the mission of God.” Simply put, He wants to be known and to have covenantal relationship with us, and He wants us to share what we know of Him to others. We all have a part to play in the mission of God. Sometimes it means going to unreached nations, and other times it might be through simple acts of at-home service. Whatever assignment He has for you at the moment, it is clear throughout Scripture from the Old Testament to the New, that He has made himself known in multiple ways, and we are called to participate in that purposeful invitation. Upside Down Kingdom - A Consecrated Life
Rolling into week 5 of the “Upside Down Kingdom” series, this week we look at a woman named Anna, whom is only spoken about one time in the entire Bible, right here in Luke 2:36-38. We’re given a few quick verses regarding her life: that she’s been a widow for most of her life, she has lived a long time, being in the temple was a constant alongside fasting and praying, she was a prophetess, and she was at the temple when Jesus was brought there by Mary and Joseph for the purification offering. One of the definitions of the word “consecrate,” according to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, is “to devote to a purpose with or as if with deep solemnity or dedication.” In other words, it is clear by the text that Anna is “set apart and devoted.” And though this consecrated life for each of us as followers of Jesus may look different for each of us individually, it is demonstrated all throughout Scripture that we are to live devoted lives that reflect His glory to the best of our ability. Along the way, God will utilize us in loving relationship with personal assignments and purposes, using the good and the broken pieces of our stories to mirror to others who He is, while we are sanctified over time to become more and more like Jesus. Upside Down Kingdom - Don't Miss It
Sometimes some of the most impactful occurrences and situations in life occur “under the radar.” We are prone to often fall into the assumption or trap that if something is not flashy, grandiose, or popular, then it must not be of importance. This week, in Luke 2:22-35, we see the story of Jesus’ early life continue as Mary and Joseph travel to the Temple in Jerusalem to offer sacrifices to the Lord, as well as go through the purification and consecration rituals spelled out in the Law of Moses. While this occurred, a “righteous and devout” (Luke 2:25) servant of the Lord named Simeon was led to meet them at the Temple to bless and speak a prophetic Word over them. This also marked a fulfillment of a personal prophecy given to Simeon, “…that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ” (Luke 2:26). What we see in this story though is an ordinary couple (at the time) in crowds of hundreds or thousands, unassumingly going about their processes and going unnoticed, except by Simeon…yet they were carrying the Savior of the World with them; someone who would change the trajectory of life as we know it by the time His earthly ministry ended. Though Jesus was “under the radar” at the beginning, the invitation today is to “not miss Jesus” now. We’re all granted a limited time on earth, and if you haven’t already, the best thing you can do is to reach out to Him and begin a genuine relationship with the creator of the universe. Upside Down Kingdom - The Royal Arrival in Bethlehem
Though we just finished the Christmas season, this week we are back into the Christmas story of the birth of Jesus, as our new “Upside Down Kingdom” series naturally continues on in Luke 2:1-20. This time, Pastor Tyler focuses on dissecting the two different kingdoms that we see in the midst of our earthly existence: one built on wealth, violence, and force, while the other is built on humility, peace, and coming quietly. I think it is a fair assumption that most of us would expect some sort of savior of the world to come in the form of royalty; with palaces, prestige, power, etc. But instead, we see Jesus born from a town that wasn’t considered wealthy, through a family that wasn’t royalty, and the first out-of-town witnesses given the great news of this coming Savior were shepherds. From the beginning, Jesus was accessible, as He is today. You don’t have to clean yourself up to come to Him. You don’t have to be the most powerful or wealthy in the world to get access. And you certainly don’t need permission from anyone to knock on His door (or open your own doors to let Him in). Phos Church Sunday Sermon 1-18-2026

Upside Down Kingdom - God Speaks in the Ordinary
Onto week 2 of our “Upside Down Kingdom” series, and this week we’re continuing in Luke 1:4-24 with the prophecy revealed of John the Baptist’s upcoming birth to Zechariah and Elizabeth. Curiously in this text, we see Zechariah question and doubt the prophecy, and was made mute until his wife gave birth. Though on the surface this can almost look like a punishment, a deeper look reveals a deeper truth that this was more of an invitation to meet the Lord with more trust, reverence, and intimacy. So often in our society we are bombarded by noise. Whether it’s the news, pings of endless notifications, or even just our general environments at times, the world that most of us live in is not a very quiet place. Where can we slow down and take intentional time with God today? To quiet the noise, let the minds decompress, and perhaps hear God a little more easily, even within the ordinary of our days? Though God can show up anywhere, including large stadium gatherings and concert environments, Scripture shows us that He will move in even the most remote places. Phos Church Sunday Sermon 1-11-2026
